The use of antidepressant and anxiolytic drugs has been increasing exponentially in Brazil. It is observed that academics from different areas of health are the ones who use them the most. This study aimed to describe the factors that influence the use of these pharmacological classes and to highlight the role of the pharmacist in the rational use of medicines. Depression is considered, globally, as one of the main public health problems, where university students take on special relevance. This study is an integrative review of the literature, by means of bibliographic survey in the Google Scholar, Virtual Health Library and Scielo databases. The results showed that 15 to 25% of university students have some type of neuropsychiatric disorder, such as depression and anxiety, as they promote health care, however, sometimes, they neglect their own health. The first pharmacological treatment option is Fluoxetine and Sertraline (50%). In this sense, guidance from the pharmacist is necessary, acting mainly on the rational use of medicines, drug interactions, risks of self-medication, evaluation of their use and dispensation.
