Abstract

Literacy has always been a bottleneck in Brazilian education, however when it comes to adult literacy the difficulties are even greater. The Basic Education Movement (MEB) implemented an important peasant literacy project, applying Paulo Freire's literacy method, and achieved great success. This research aims to analyze the training of monitors for peasant literacy in Goiás in the 1960s. The methodology used is bibliographical research. The results point to an innovation in the methodology for training monitors, who were also local peasants. It is concluded that the training of monitors by MEB had great relevance in obtaining excellent results in the literacy process of Goiás peasants in the 1960s, and that the same occurred thanks to the innovative character through the applicability of Paulo Freire's literacy method in teacher training and literacy training for peasant youth and adults, which is why this experience should be seen as an example to be followed in future Brazilian educational policies.
