Abstract

The objective of this article is to accomplish a theoretical analysis of the movie
"Prayers for Bobby" in order to verify whether the religious beliefs and behavior Bobby
character’s family may have contributed to the development of Early Maladaptive Schemas on
the character and his subsequent suicide. Through construction of a theoretical framework that
took into account homosexuality, religion and Early Maladaptive Schemas in which the
parameters of these topics have been described and documentary research with qualitative
approach, having the cinematographic work "Prayers for Bobby" as object of analysis. From
the analysis of expressed reports by Bobby and his family, it was identified Early Maladaptive
Schemas of Defectiveness/Shame on the character, which can be illustrated when it reports
feeling ashamed of being gay and when shows feel unworthy of love of God and his family. It
was verified that the family environment and the way Bobby's family, particularly his mother,
dealt with the fact of the son being gay were aversive environmental variables that could be
related to the development of the scheme found in the young and his subsequent suicide. Thus,
one can see that both the Defectiveness/Shame this scheme on Bobby as aversive environmental
experiences to which he was involved directly influenced in his suicide.
