Keywords:
Schemas, Romantic Relationships, Dysfunctional relationshipsAbstract
This study aimed to investigate whether schemas are related to the maintenance of dysfunctional relationships that do not satisfy the partners or even prove destructive to one or both participants in the relationship. Therefore, through Young's Schema Theory, the different types and domains of schemas, their characteristics, and which ones may fit into an individual who submits to this type of aforementioned relationship are highlighted. The overall objective of this study is to identify the schemas that keep individuals in conflictual and unsatisfactory relationships and how they interfere with the behaviors that these individuals emit within the relationship. This research is of a bibliographic, qualitative nature and will be developed from already prepared materials, generally consisting of books and scientific articles. For its realization, a literature review was carried out along with scientific databases such as Scielo, BVSPsi, among others. This research concludes that maladaptive schemas influence the maintenance of dysfunctional romantic relationships, as they promote dysfunctional behaviors related to various factors where the individual subjects himself/herself to degrading situations due to impaired self-concept. Data was found that demonstrates that individuals with schemas of defectiveness/shame, mistrust/abuse, social isolation, among others, remain in dysfunctional relationships, emitting also dysfunctional behaviors within them.
