Obesity is a chronic disease that has a multifactorial origin and is associated with
increased morbidity and mortality. In cases of morbidly obese patients, bariatric
surgery is considered one of the best treatment options. However, it has several
consequences and complications, and with regard to the psychological/emotional aspect. The study aimed to present the consequences of bariatric surgery in the
psychological sphere, to understand the possible increase in disorders after the
procedure and what this implies in the post-surgical period. This is a literature review
based on bibliographic research, and its main online databases were Academic
Google, SciELO and PEPSIC. Based on the findings in the literature, it was possible
to verify that the sudden weight loss caused by the surgical procedure generates, in
many cases, intense psychological/emotional suffering and can cause: depression,
anxiety, eating disorders, symptoms of self-aggression, among others. Finally, the
importance of pre- and post-surgical psychological follow-up is highlighted, as well as
a precise and thorough psychological assessment with regard to the approval for the
surgery.
